Things are changing pretty rapidly in the world of E-mountain bikes right now! Battery and motor tech has changed so much if you look backwards to what E-bikes originally were, but are those the only constraints on what the future holds? Steve has gathered a few development managers from our friends at Specialized and Canyon to chat through where they think the sport is going to progress to!

the problem with current EMTB is that they are producing for the hardcore enthusiast who are STILL ARE DUMB enough to spend a ton of money on high end parts that don´t even last using antique technology. The lightweight aspect does not make sense anymore since everything is battery powered. We need an EMTB that can handle all situations, from commuting to training. All these "experts" and their opinions tell me that their companies won´t be around for long. People want reliable, high performance, long lasting battery powered machines, not specialized niched pricy machine for skillful training or whatever. My guess for the future: in 20 years, not a single Europe or USA based bike company will be around supplying mainstream consumers. They will compete in a niched market while all the big manufacturers will be based in Asian countries like Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and China. I will get my Modmo Saigon all electric bike made in Vietnam soon. It is actually a lot more revolutionary than anything currently being "designed in, made in" bikes from the old brands.

It would be cool if handlebars were more adjustable for upright leisure riding vs hunched over for mountain biking... I really like the points the guy with the shaved head makes... It needs to remain a bike. We will definitely reach a point where the bike will be capable of calculating and doing everything for you, which would be cool for a few rides but overall really boring

Better battery tech that allows it to be lighter and still have the same or more range. A bit more torque would be good for bigger riders (I’m 105kg). Smaller components so that the bikes don’t look so chunky. Lighter weight so you can throw it around like a regular bike. Integrated gearbox in the motor with a belt drive and also regenerative braking that is automatically activated with the rear brake lever. Better integration so that electrical cables are all hidden and not exposed to damage. Integrated lights. Ebikes are already awesome but they will be amazing in 10 years time.

Between now and 10 yeas time I think they will have an alternator to trickle charge the batteries while riding as well as possibly winged hinged solar panels for the ones that ride long distances on road or beach shore riding.

Interesting to see if other technologies like Traction Control or Anti-lock brake will make their way into the e-bike world, not maybe for mountain bikes but I see that coming, especially as more car/motorcycle companies move into the market. I think the next big improvement will be integrated gearboxes with the motor and get rid of derailers etc.. then we could be talking carbon shaft drives and all sorts of options. I totally dig the options to plan a route and have the system manage the optimum power for you...

Since I purchased my 2017 S-Works Turbo Levo 6-Fattie, the price of a new 2021 S-Works StumpJumper has jumped to more than double what I paid. That is simply gouging the consumers. The R&D that went into my bike has already been re-paid. The new bikes are only marginally upgraded over the ensuing years. The cost of these new innovations has been merely incremental for the vendor. I feel that Specialized has become way too greedy. There's a lot of profit being taken without much improvement for us consumers. I'll be looking to other brands for my next purchase.

I guess it’s unavoidable, but this tends to focus on the wishes and demands of current, very capable riders. There’s a huge opportunity for everyone, and the environment, to attract more people into the sport by making it easier and cheaper. Sure we all want fun and exercise, but we’re not all stump jumpers, and can’t all afford £5k for a toy. Flexibility of use (off road, on-road), comfort, weight, ease of transporting the damn things, maintenance free drivetrains (it’s surely time to ditch chains and derailleurs) and motors must all feature. Battery technology has got to be number 1 though... Solid-state (glass or graphene) batteries will take the potential range into hundreds of miles, with negligible weight. So should I spend my cash now, or wait a little?

Reliability is the most important factor followed by handling,Fun factor , silence and software.
Battery Intergration , Carbon and lightweight bikes not so important.
Specialized overthought it and went backwards in 2019/20 with a noisier ½ kg lighter levo motor( with a 1kg heavier battery) that had thousands of failures. The 2018 1.3 brose motor is silent, reliable, and powerfully smooth with the latest software updates. E=MTB²

I ride a 2020 turbo levo. It replaced a 1995 stumpjumper fsr... lol not similar! I don’t need more power. I don’t need more battery range. I need better execution. When I change gears going up hill pressing hard on the pedals I hate that I need to be my own clutch (by momentarily reducing pedal power) to keep the chain from grinding my cassette. If there’s a computer and electronic drivetrains, it shouldn’t be a revolution to get the motor to talk to the shifter to make for smoother shifting under power. But the riding experience would be revolutionary. I love my new bike. Don’t need a cute app to keep my heart rate in a range. My fitness vs need for speed does that. Don’t need to program to use battery to optimize power to finish my ride with 25% battery left over. Better power modulation that maximizes traction while eliminating cassette grinding would make me go back into my wallet.

Might have added. I’ve been off my old bike for years. Coach high school lacrosse... lost season due to covid. So I got back on the bike to replace fitness I’d have realized running around with kids. My old bike couldn’t handle modern trail plus I was fat and out of shape. I’m 58 so I was attracted to ebike. Lost 30 lbs since July. Blow by everyone going up hill. Try to be polite about it. Tore my rear derailleur in super muddy rocky chain suck episode last week. Pulled the old bike out to get the heart rate up and still blew by the 30 year olds going uphill but was scared to death on descent. Told my wife I’m grateful that I wasn’t this fit when I pulled my old bike out in May because I might not have bought the levo which is so damn fun to ride. Except for the incidental crash, broken rib, separated shoulder and concussion the one time the jump went wrong. Lol

Yes, don’t create a motorcycle. Yes, don’t facilitate loss of current trail access. Yes, remember a bicycle not only has peddles, but simply shouldn’t go anywhere unless the rider pushes quite hard on them.
I’m not against motorbikes, they’re wonderful things. But they’re also not bicycles and they don’t need the e-MTB industry to go chasing them.
    Please?

serial 1 is a great start. Auto shifting, belt drive. most of the answers. A 706 battery is more than adequate and riding on the street vs. the mountains extends the range as you don't need the most assist. Your ass will wear out before the battery.
There are lots of new bikes with awd but not great on rocky roads as the hub motors will absorb a lot of the shock and break down eventually. I like the idea of adding a front hub to a mid drive full suspension. I have been in the ebike business for four years now and that is 28 in ebike years. ebike big bear is my channel for Big Bear CA rides. Open Trails EMTB is the best shop in the US.

It will have more capable bikes, be more connected, use more exotic materials, use parts that cost more, be generally more expensive and also where you will be able to ride will be more restricted.
I want bikes to be molded, forged or printed where the buyer lives, use parts that last years and are easy to replace, be more in balance with the environment, be affordable for everybody and for terms like cyclist, pedestrian and biker to be replaced with the word person.

How about an ebike that adjusted to your power/hr zones? Put in your zones and the level of ride intensity you want and the power assist adjusts “on the fly” accordingly. Changes from the current paradigm where you define the level of support you want to the level of input you want to give. Zone 1 day the motor gives it the beans and you’re twiddling, Zone 5 day you’re charging the battery as the motor regeneratively brakes (😂)

Ditch the dirty chain and derailier . Especially on ebikes. Belt driven with a built in gearbox. But always pedal assist 👍⚡

I have been using an ebike since 2014, I have replaced motor every year due to poor motors that can’t handle heat. I had to use bile as main transport due to random epilepsy. So have now ordered a Frey EX as bigger motor at lower speeds would last for years

I'm sure someone can come up with a system to put power back into the battery as you use the bike just to give you a bit more range👍

If you build your own emtb then you can choose Re-gen braking. I built My own emtb, Re-gen braking, 1700wh, cruise control, pedal assist and throttle, and a totally silent motor! And all for £1,800

Levociraptor plug n play harness transformed our Levos and we became their US and Canadian distributer! The standard speed governor is terrible.

I would definetly like they integrate auto power levels with elevation maps so it auto calculates and sets the power to do any trip without running out of battery. This could be already done since it's all a software job.

need to discuss if evolving technology can/will develop a user interface to build a custom frame/kit emtb for rider
the 'FIT' will always be the critical factor for user: SAFETY, enjoyment, performance, utilizing the on-board technology efficiently ....
should design tools be available to riders for custom builds?
could be a new revenue stream for manufacturers
    voice command interface while riding
    reduce environmental impact

I would love an E-bike like a Specialized Levo or similar but i ain`t payin around £4500 to risk getting it nicked and the manufacturers have NO intention at all of bringing the prices down in the near future even though they could no problem at all, (if anything prices will keep going UP as materials & technology gets even more advanced ), if the current £4500 E-bike`s were dropped to £2500 i would buy one tomorrow but then the current non E full suspension bikes that are averaging £2500 & your hardtails averaging £1000+ would all have to be marked down too in correlation & that aint going to happen!

great vid! for the future i want more comparability over the brands. that means 625Wh on a brand x and 625Wh on brand y? the answer should be the usefull or netto Wh. Every car manufacture does that per law. Bike manufactures should this too.

-Auto adjustable profile of tires, on the fly, that never go flat. (profile not air volume)
-Auto adjustable suspension on the fly for different terrain.
-Fully integrated full-fledged bike/trip computers with RT weather and trip info.
-Get Home/Emergency Max Speed Mode for max power output to avoid Pop-Up rainstorms nearby ect and not just the electronically limited power outputs we have today. (you can flash a custom firmware for max speed today if you have the know how)
-Integrated bike radar with peloton mode and adjustable distance.
    -HUD. (in glasses or goggles)
-Transport Mode for car transport (without hideous seams and hinges of today's bikes)
-ABS for front brake at speed. (no endos at high speeds) (mostly for beginners)
    - Integrated 2-Way anti theft system with 1 km range and no subscription fees. (aftermarket car alarms have this today!)
-Oh and Rocket Boosters. (for when things get really fun)

To the Spesh guy, some of us want to ride more than 3-4 hours. Easy to replace backpack friendly batteries and/or external "water bottle" batteries for the Turbo Levo plz. Gates belt drive and Pinion-style internal center gearing eventually.

I'm looking forward to new break throughs in battery technology and automated gears along with carbon belt chains. Ebikes over time will become more natural when pedaling get longer ranges and become lighter over time. Can't wait for those days!!!!
